Day de Dada - Performance Art Festival Bio

"Day de Dada" was started by local artist Vivian Vassar (known as Hey Viv ! ) in Staten Island in 2002 after a visit to Café Voltaire in Zurich, a site of early 20th century Dada art. The original "Day de Dada" was planned as a one day event to showcase performance art on Staten Island.

The first "Day de Dada" show took place in April 2002 and featured 20+ artists performing original works on stage at the Muddy Cup, a local art venue. Audience reaction was so favorable that it was decided to make "Day de Dada" an annual event.

"Day de Dada - Part Deux" took place in April 2003, also at the Muddy Cup and attracted a wide range of artists and performers of all ages and backgrounds. The show continued the Dada theme of creating experimental and nontraditional live art and audience participation.

"Day de Dada - Journey to the Edge of Dada" in April 2004 took the event in a new direction with a daylong show at multiple venues in Staten Island. The show became a moving performance art show with the audience and artists moving together from the Vlepo gallery to the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences, the St George Theater, Tattfoo Gallery, PS 16 and Muddy Cup Coffee House. Each stop featured different artists and different performances.

The 2005 "Day de Dada" show, now known as the "Day de Dada Performance Art Festival" included several events held throughout the month of June. These included workshops at PS 16 and Curtis High School, "Dada ID: Imagine Dada" an afternoon of performance art at the SI Museum at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center Main Hall, "Day de Dada Film Fest - Film and Video at the Independent Film Night at the Muddy Cup" and "BYOA" (Bring Your Own Art) a Day de Dada Art Show at the Vlepo Gallery.

The 2006 "Day de Dada Performance Art Festival" celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the signing of the Dada Manifesto with events on Staten Island at NYC Arts Cypher, the SI Museum and ETG (Everything Goes Café). The Festival expanded off island and included a film and video event at Anthology Film Archives and Le Petit Versailles in Manhattan. In 2007 the Festival included shows at Martini Red, Brooklyn Museum of Art and Figment Festival.

The "Day de Dada" shows have included artists of all ages and backgrounds from Staten Island, the Tri State area and Europe. Students and teachers from several schools including PS 16 and Curtis High School on Staten Island have participated. And support for the "Day de Dada" show has included three Grants through COAHSI in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

"Day de Dada" is spontaneous and experimental performance art, installations, video, film, music, noise and interactive events. "Day de Dada" will continue to grow as an art event with future shows including web based performance art and outreach to the public through mini Dada events and workshops.

"Dada is a state of mind. That is why it transforms itself according to races and events. Dada applies itself to everything, and yet it is nothing, it is the point where the yes and the no and all the opposites meet, not solemnly in the castles of human philosophies, but very simply at street corners, like dogs and grasshoppers."

Tristan Tzara
